How to Recognize Signs of a Slab Leak

In homes built on concrete foundations, water and sewer lines run beneath the slab. When one of those pipes leaks, it can cause serious structural damage before you even realize something’s wrong.

That’s why spotting a slab leak early is so important. Knowing the warning signs can help you avoid expensive repairs and protect your home’s foundation.

What Is a Slab Leak?

A slab leak happens when a water line under your home’s concrete foundation cracks or bursts. Over time, that leak lets water pool under the slab, eroding soil and weakening the structure. These leaks can happen to both hot and cold water lines, although hot water leaks are more common because heat speeds up wear and tear on piping.

Common causes include:

  • Shifting soil or foundation movement
  • Corrosion from minerals in the water
  • Poor pipe installation or materials
  • High water pressure or temperature changes

Signs You Might Have a Slab Leak

Because the leak is hidden under concrete, it’s not always obvious. But your home gives you clues.

1. Unexplained Water Bills

If your water bill suddenly spikes and you can’t find a reason, water could be escaping underground. Slab leaks can waste hundreds of gallons a month without you seeing a single drop.

2. Warm Spots on the Floor

Do you notice certain areas of your floor feel warm underfoot? That’s often a giveaway of a hot water line leaking beneath the slab. Tile and hardwood floors make this easier to feel.

3. Damp or Warped Flooring

When water seeps upward, it can wet your carpet, bubble up your laminate, or warp your hardwood flooring. You might even see dark stains or mildew near the baseboards.

4. The Sound of Running Water

If you can hear water running when every faucet and appliance is turned off, something’s wrong. Slab leaks can produce a faint hissing or rushing noise that you can hear near the floor.

5. Low Water Pressure

A hidden leak reduces the pressure in your plumbing system. If your faucets or shower suddenly lose strength, and you’ve ruled out other causes, it could be a slab leak.

What to Do If You Suspect a Slab Leak

Don’t try to tackle this one on your own. Slab leaks need specialized tools and expertise. A licensed plumber can perform a slab leak detection test with thermal imaging to locate the exact source.
