How to Protect Your Home from Springtime Flooding Before the Rain Starts

Rain is a part of life each spring, but for many, that means springtime flooding. This can be a flooding of the yard, the basement, the parking lot or driveway, and more. The problem is, when your yard or structure floods, it can lead to a wide range of problems. Thankfully, there are things you can do prior to those spring showers to avoid many water emergencies.

Tips to Keep Springtime Flooding to a Minimum

There are many steps you can take to minimize any chances of springtime flooding. Here are a few we recommend that can help keep your home or business safer when the rain starts.

  • Make sure your gutters are empty. Full gutters can lead to problems with moving water away from the structure they are connected to.
  • Have your pipes inspected. When spring rains hit, you want to have as empty of pipes as possible. That way, wherever the water drains to, your pipes can take the water away. During an inspection, you can figure out if your pipes are clean or if they need hydro jetting.
  • Keep the landscaping sloped away from the building. If your landscaping leans towards the building, this could lead to puddles and standing water, resulting in flooding.
  • Make sure your sump pump is fully functional. This way, if any water does get in, you have a way of pushing it away from your home or business.
  • Cover any flood-prone areas with plastic and tip it away from the building. If you use this technique, you can prevent water buildup in window wells, divots in your landscaping, and more.
