Why You Shouldn’t DIY That Faucet Repair

When a faucet starts dripping, it’s tempting to think, “How hard can this really be?” With so many online tutorials and “quick fix” videos out there, DIY faucet repairs seem simple enough. The problem is that plumbing’s one of those areas where a small mistake can turn into a big, expensive problem fast, which is exactly why you’re usually better off calling a professional.

It’s Never Just the Faucet

That minor faucet issue may actually be the tip of that proverbial iceberg. A slow drip might be a worn-out washer, but it could just as easily be excess water pressure, corrosion inside the fixture, a failing valve, or even an issue with the pipes. When you try to fix what you think is the problem but don’t know what’s happening deeper in the plumbing, you risk masking the issue instead of fixing it.

You Can Create More Damage

Plumbing fixtures can be surprisingly delicate, and putting too much pressure or not using the right tool can damage them instantly. One tight turn with a wrench can crack a cartridge, distort a seal, or strip a connection. A project that seemed like it might only need a $30 part becomes a complete faucet replacement, and maybe even drywall repair if a leak forms afterward.

Leaks Can Be Sneaky and Costly

Not all leaks are obvious. Sometimes a DIY attempt stops the drip you can see, but creates a slow leak where you can’t see it. A loose connection under the sink or a cracked fitting inside the faucet body can let water leak for weeks before you notice the damage. Water damage gets expensive quickly and can mean you’re on the hook for more replacement costs.

You Could Void a Warranty

Many faucets come with manufacturer warranties. But here’s the catch: those warranties usually stipulate that you need professional installation or repair. If you take the faucet apart and something goes wrong, you could lose that coverage entirely.

Your Time Is Worth Something

Even a “simple” faucet repair can turn into an hours-long project when you’re not familiar with the parts. You might find yourself running back and forth to the hardware store. Your time is worth more than that.
