The Dangers of DIY Drain Cleaning

Everyone has experienced a clogged drain at one time or another. Whether the shower drain started to back up or the kitchen sink began to overflow on the floor, you know that fast action is needed. Many clogs can be handled easily by a plumber but people choose DIY drain cleaners as they are inexpensive and can solve the problem.

What you may not realize is that these cleaners can cause more problems than they can solve. Lasting results are typically not possible without the help of a professional plumber.

Exposure to Chemicals

While boiling water down the drain might work for minor clogs, it isn’t going to work for most other things. It can be dangerous in some cases. Adding in drain cleaners is just worse. Many are toxic and corrosive. After the cleaner has been used, these chemicals can stick around and cause problems. Avoid these cleaners so those in your home aren’t exposed to toxic chemicals.

Damaged Pipes

Some drain cleaners use a large amount of hydrochloric acid, which is a highly corrosive substance. The cleaner can eat through a clog but may do the same thing to your pipes and sewer system as a whole. Cleaners with large amounts of acids also kill the useful bacteria in the system. This help breaks down waste to prevent clogs.

Exacerbate Current Problems

If there is an existing issue with your plumbing, adding a drain cleaner can make the situation worse. Whether you are working with the main drain, mainline, or toilet, a DIY drain cleaner can make a small issue much more serious. This is common if there is a plumbing leak, a loosened connection, or a pipe burst. These problems will be more expensive than just bringing in a plumber to handle the clog.

Not Rectifying the Bigger Issue

When there is a clog in a drain, there can be many causes for it. Sometimes the underlying issue is more extreme than expected. Only a qualified plumber can determine if this is the case and make the needed repairs. Professionals can properly asses drains and make fixes to ensure you can use all the fixtures in your home.
