Leaking Faucet

Should You Call a Plumber for That Leaking Faucet?

Dealing with a leaking faucet is no fun. From the endless plink-plink-plink of water dripping to the additional cost on your water bill, faucet leaks make life difficult. All you want is to put a stop to it, but how? Can you do it yourself or should you call a plumber?

While you might be able to go the DIY route, that may not be advisable. Let’s run down a list of factors to consider so you can decide for yourself whether you should call a plumber or not.

Tools

First, do you have the tools you’ll need to deal with a faucet leak? This can include some standard options, like an adjustable wrench, pliers, and a screwdriver, but some faucets may need specialty tools, like cartridge pullers. If you don’t have the tools necessary, it’s going to be simpler to call in the pros rather than try to buy everything you’ll need.

Materials

Do you have access to all the materials you’ll need to make the repair? Depending on the age of the faucet, that could be a replacement cartridge, but it also might be replacement springs or an entire new faucet. Do you even know what materials you’ll need? If not, then it’s better to call a plumber.

Skills

Another consideration is whether you have the skills necessary or not. If you’ve never tried to repair a leaking faucet before, is this the best time to learn? Do you have access to tutorials that will help ensure you get it right? If you’re not 100% sure that you know how to fix a leaking faucet, calling a plumber is a good idea.

Related Damage

A leaking faucet might be just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There could be underlying water damage that’s not apparent until you have everything torn apart. If you don’t know how to repair that damage, you’ll be in a difficult spot.

Calling a professional to handle something as seemingly simple as a leaking faucet might seem like overkill. However, you can see that there are plenty of reasons why you should make that call. Here at Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing, we can handle any project, from repairing aging faucets to dealing with underlying water damage. Get in touch with us today to deal with that annoying leak right away.
