Plumbing Maintenance Checklist Every Homeowner Should Do Monthly

Your home’s plumbing system works hard every day, delivering fresh water where you need it and carrying waste safely away. But like any other system, it requires regular attention to keep running smoothly. Ignoring maintenance can lead to leaks, clogs, and costly repairs that could have been avoided with just a little monthly care and awareness.

Here’s a simple monthly plumbing checklist every homeowner should follow to keep their system in top shape.

1. Check for Leaks

Inspect under sinks, around toilets, and near appliances like dishwashers and washing machines. Look for puddles, drips, or moisture stains. Even small leaks can waste hundreds of gallons of water and cause significant damage over time if left unaddressed.

2. Test Water Pressure

Turn on faucets and showers to make sure the water pressure is steady and strong. Sudden pressure drops could signal a leak, mineral buildup, or an issue with your water supply line that should be addressed promptly.

3. Inspect Drains for Slow Flow

Run water in sinks, tubs, and showers to check how quickly it drains. If you notice slow drainage, it’s better to clear the clog now rather than wait for it to become a complete blockage later.

4. Flush Unused Drains

If you have guest bathrooms or sinks that aren’t used often, run water for a minute to keep P-traps full and prevent sewer gas odors from entering your home.

5. Examine Your Water Heater

Check the area around your water heater for leaks, rust, or corrosion. Listen for unusual noises, which could mean sediment buildup inside the tank and signal the need for maintenance.

6. Clean Faucet Aerators and Shower heads

Mineral deposits can reduce water flow. Unscrew aerators and shower heads and soak them in vinegar to dissolve buildup, restoring proper flow and efficiency.

7. Test Toilet Function

Flush each toilet to ensure it’s working correctly and not running continuously. A running toilet wastes water and could indicate a worn flapper or another simple fix.

8. Look Outside

Inspect outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks or drips. This is especially important before and after winter, when freezing temperatures can damage fixtures.

The Bottom Line

Spending just 15–20 minutes each month on basic plumbing maintenance can save you from expensive repairs and inconvenient breakdowns. Consistency is key. Make it part of your household routine, and your plumbing system will last longer and perform better year-round .Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing is your local answer for all things plumbing, six days a week.
