How to Identify Dangerous Leaks in Pipes

Dripping faucets are often annoying, but in some cases they can be dangerous. A leak in your water pipes is usually the result of worn-out parts, which means that the problem could lead to bigger issues down the road. Fortunately, there are several ways to identify these types of leaks so you can get them fixed right away before they do any damage to your house or property.

What to Look for First

Many leaks in household plumbing fixtures start out as slow drips. If you leave the drip unattended for a long enough period of time, it will eventually turn into a full stream and cause even more costly problems than if you had fixed it sooner. Once this starts happening, it’s important to determine where the water is coming from and take the appropriate steps to fix it.

Sometimes, leaks will start as a small stream, but not at first drip. These types of leaks can be harder to identify because you might not know something has gone wrong until the leak starts pooling on the floor or other areas around your house. However, if you hear water running for long periods of time and only notice a wet spot later on, this could be a sign that you have an issue with your plumbing system like a cracked or broken pipe.

If those methods don’t work, another good way to find out where the leak is coming from is by turning off all your appliances and fixtures one by one until you no longer see any puddles forming in the surrounding areas. This method only works if the leak is coming from a close proximity, as in something as simple as a toilet leaking into your bathroom floor. However, if you use this method and still can’t find where the water is coming from, call a professional for help.
