5 Most Common Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems are common in homes across America. If your home includes a faucet, drain, or garbage disposal, there’s a good chance that you’ve had to deal with at least one plumbing issue in the past. While some people are able to fix their own plumbing problems, others need to call a plumber. No matter what kind of problem you’re dealing with, it’s important to know the most common plumbing issues and when it is time to call in professional help.

Clogged Drains

A clog in any drain (shower, sink, toilet, or bathtub) can cause water to begin pooling in that area. Since the drain is no longer able to carry away the backed-up water, it needs to be fixed by a plumber.

Dripping Faucet

A leaky faucet will waste a lot of water over time and may damage other parts of your plumbing system. In order to repair this issue, you should try tightening all of the nuts on your faucets. If this doesn’t work, it’s time for a new washer or cartridge since these are what help control how much water comes through your faucets when they’re open and closed. If those do not fix the issue, then you call in the pros.

Slow Drains

One tell-tale sign that you have a clog in your drain is that water will be slow to drain through it. To avoid this problem, regularly clean out any hair or soap scum that might accumulate in your drains. If that does not stop the problem, it may be a good idea to have your pipes inspected with a video camera to see what is going on inside them.

Leaky Pipe

A leaky pipe usually means water damage and the need for an emergency plumber. If you notice wet spots on the floor around any of your plumbing fixtures (sink, shower, tub), it’s time to call a professional right away.

Water Heater Problems

An older model water heater may lose its ability to keep water hot even though it’s still turned on. If you find that there isn’t enough hot water available or that the temperature fluctuates throughout the day, it’s probably time to install a new water heater.
