The Most Common Sewer Line Issues

The sewer line is one of the most crucial parts of a plumbing system. It’s essentially the master drain for the entire home. All the drains, pipes, and fixtures associated with the plumbing connections to the main sewer line.

A sewer line can move wastewater away from the home and into the sewer. It’s critical that it works appropriately as repairs can be expensive and messy. Regular maintenance is a good way to prevent the need for sewer line replacements and repairs.

There are a few common sewer line issues to be aware of. Watch for them so you can get them fixed quickly if they occur.

Grease Deposits

You may have heard that it’s a bad idea to pour grease down the sink, but do you know why? Grease shouldn’t be put into the pipes because it hardens as it cools off. This means it can easily build up and create a major blockage that leads to other problems down the line.

Rather than taking your chances, place grease into a sealed container instead. Then place it in the trash to get rid of it.

Pipe Corrosion

Wastewater and other substances can lead to pipe corrosion. This means the pipes rust and eventually collapse. This leads to a restriction on the wastewater moving through the sewer line. Having a camera inspection done each year can ensure this isn’t already occurring. It shows the inside of the pipes and gives evidence of any rust.

To prevent this issue, be mindful of what you put in the drain or flush down the toilet. Anything acidic will make it more likely that the pipes corrode.

Tree Roots

Especially in old sewer lines, tree roots can be a significant issue. While trees might look great in the yard, they can cause damage to your plumbing as the roots move out and crush the lines. This can lead to backups and clogs as time goes on.

Avoiding trees near pipes is the best way to prevent this issue. Inspections can also determine whether roots are nearby that might cause issues. Watch for slow draining and be aware of where plumbing lines are to prevent bigger issues.
