Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning Should Include Freshening Your Drains

Spring is a time when everything is fresh and new. The sun comes out, the grass starts growing, and the world is coming back to life after winter. It’s a great time to clean your home and it’s a time when many people engage in routine spring cleaning activities to get the winter blues dusted, swept, and scrubbed right out of their homes. Everyone’s list of spring cleaning activities will vary, of course.

Your list should include a refresh for your drains. We’re not talking about harsh chemical cleaners, either. In this case, just a nice hot water flush along with some baking soda can do wonders. If you want to get the drains clean, add a little white vinegar to create a foam that can clean the sides of pipes better than you might expect.

There are several home remedies and ideas online for freshening your drains and making sure that they’re always running free. In the bathrooms, take the time to remove hair and other debris from the stopper and the top of the drain. In all your sinks, check the traps and clean them out (if they’re easy to remove). Add some lemon or other citrus to your drains and your garbage disposal to freshen things up, too.

Make sure that you’re not putting things down the drain that shouldn’t go there. That will make it easier to freshen things up without any serious work involved. Aside from water and soap, you should minimize the food, drinks, and other items that you put down the drains in your home. Liquids are fine, but some can cause buildup or damage over time, so it’s important to think about what you’re putting down the drains before you start dumping.

Often, people find that they have foul or unpleasant odors in their homes, but they cannot locate the source. Drains that have not been properly cleaned and maintained can be a big source of odors, so that should be the first place that you look. Flies and other bugs can also thrive in dirty drains, so keeping them clean will help keep pests away, too.

Refreshing your drains is a simple task that will only take a few minutes. However, it can make a big impact on your spring cleaning agenda and get you started on the right foot.
