Frozen Pipes

Preparing for a Harsh Winter

The winters of Chicago are known for being bitterly cold, and you need to be sure your home is prepared for the worst. This is particularly true with your plumbing and your water heater. The last thing you need is to find out that you have a burst pipe, frozen pipes, or a water heater that has decided to go on the fritz. It’s always better to be prepared.

Have the Plumbing Checked and Keep It Properly Maintained

One of the best things you can do for your plumbing is to make sure that you maintain it properly year after year. Even if you don’t notice any issues, it’s a good idea to have a plumber come out annually for an inspection. The professionals can spot any potential issues long before you could on your own. They can make any fixes or upgrades that might be needed, so you won’t have to worry about having major problems in the winter.

Look for Signs of Freezing Pipes

Freezing pipes are no fun. It could mean that you don’t have any water running in your home at all, and it can be difficult to thaw them out on your own. This is especially true when there are multiple days with freezing temperatures. You don’t want to wait for them to thaw on their own. It’s better to talk with a plumber, who can make sure they have proper insulation.

Give the Water Heater a Checkup

You should also have a checkup annually for your water heater to make sure it’s in good shape. It’s no fun to have to take a freezing shower in the morning. A professional can let you know if you need repairs, or if it might be time to finally get a new water heater.

Get in Touch with a Plumber at the First Sign of a Problem

If you notice that there are any issues with your plumbing, if you have slow draining sinks, low pressure, or if you have a questionable water heater, contact a plumber sooner rather than later.

Additionally, make sure that your home is ready for anything that the cold winter might throw at you. This includes blackouts and prolonged periods without power. Make sure you have plenty of extra blankets, candles, and water, and food that you can prepare without needing electricity. A little precaution in your home goes a long way.
