Frozen Pipes

How to Prepare Your Plumbing System for Extreme Weather Events

Extreme weather events, such as freezing temperatures, heavy rainfall, and storms, can put your plumbing system at risk. Preventive measures before severe weather strikes can save you from costly repairs and water damage. Here’s how to prepare your plumbing system to withstand extreme conditions.

1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

One of the most significant risks during cold weather is frozen pipes. When water inside the pipes freezes, it expands and can cause the pipes to burst, leading to flooding. Insulating exposed pipes—especially those in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, and garages—is a simple but effective way to prevent freezing. Pipe insulation materials, such as foam sleeves or heat tape, provide added protection.

2. Seal Gaps and Cracks

Cold air can seep through cracks or gaps in walls and floors, exposing your pipes to freezing temperatures. Check around windows, doors, and foundation areas for any drafts. Seal gaps with caulking or weatherstripping to block cold air and help maintain a more consistent temperature inside your home.

3. Know Where Your Main Shut-Off Valve Is

In case of a plumbing emergency, such as a burst pipe, it’s essential to know how to shut off the water supply to your home quickly. Locate your main shut-off valve and ensure everyone in your household knows where it is and how to operate it. This can help minimize water damage.

4. Clear Drains and Gutters

Heavy rainfall can overwhelm your home’s drainage system, leading to flooding or backups. Ensure your drains, gutters, and downspouts are clear of debris, such as leaves or dirt, which can cause blockages. This helps water flow freely away from your home and prevents water from pooling around the foundation.

5. Disconnect Outdoor Hoses and Turn Off Exterior Faucets

Before freezing temperatures hit, disconnect any outdoor hoses and drain them of water. Leaving hoses attached to faucets can trap water in the pipes, leading to freezing and potential bursts. Also, shut off water to exterior faucets using the shut-off valve inside your home, and drain the faucets to prevent freezing.

6. Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

A professional plumbing inspection from Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing before extreme weather can help identify any weak points in your system. Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing can check for leaks, inspect pipe insulation, and ensure everything is in working order before the weather worsens.

By preparing your plumbing system, you can reduce the risk of damage and keep your home safe during extreme weather events.
