This is a common question and one that can vary depending on just who you ask. Typically, a water heater is going to last for between eight and 12 years. However, different manufacturers might have different expected life services for their machines.
Generally, sticking to the eight to 12 years as a rule of thumb is a good idea, though. Just keep in mind that things like the amount of use the water heater gets, the design of the unit, the quality of the installation, the water quality, and whether it was properly maintained will all play a role.
Needless to say, though, if you have a water heater that is more than 12 years old, it is nearing the end of its life. It is time to start thinking about replacing it. Opting to replace it before it fully breaks down might be a good idea.
One of the questions you might have when there is trouble with your water heater, is whether you should have it repaired, or if you should replace it instead. The answer will vary based on several factors. If you have a relatively new water heater, then a repair might be a better solution. In those cases where it is still under warranty, it might make more sense to have a new one to replace it, though.
Of course, those who have older water heaters that are pushing the limit of usability will find that buying a new one is just a better idea. The cost of regular repairs, along with the inconvenience of needing constant repairs is just not worth it.
There is not a “best” option that will work for everyone, of course. There are always going to be different factors that you will need to consider. How much will you be using the water heater? Make sure you check the dimensions, so it will fit in the location where you are going to be putting it, as well. Determine whether electric or gas will serve you better.
