Emergency Plumbing Situations: What to Do Before the Professionals Arrive

Plumbing emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. A burst pipe, overflowing toilet, or significant leak can quickly lead to water damage, costly repairs, and stress. While calling a professional plumber should be your first move, there are essential steps you can take right away to minimize damage and keep your home safe. Here’s what to do before the experts arrive.

1. Shut Off the Water

Your first priority in any plumbing emergency is to stop the water flow. Locate your main water shut-off valve near the water meter or where the main line enters your home and turn it off. For localized issues, like a leaky faucet or overflowing toilet, shut off the water supply to that fixture.

Knowing where your shut-off valves are before an emergency can save precious time and prevent significant damage.

2. Turn Off the Water Heater

If you suspect a major leak or your plumbing issue involves hot water, it’s a good idea to turn off your water heater to prevent damage to the unit and reduce the risk of overheating or pressure buildup. For electric water heaters, switch off the breaker; turn the gas valve to the “pilot” setting for gas models.

3. Contain the Leak

Use towels, buckets, or even old blankets to catch leaking water and prevent it from spreading. If a pipe bursts or a significant leak is visible, wrapping it in a thick cloth and securing it with duct tape can help slow the flow until a plumber arrives.

4. Clear the Area

Remove any furniture, rugs, or valuables from the affected area to prevent water damage. If flooding is involved, be cautious; standing water can cause electrical hazards, especially near outlets or appliances.

5. Avoid DIY Fixes in Critical Situations

While it may be tempting to start repairs yourself, avoid the urge to disassemble plumbing unless you’re confident in your abilities. A quick fix could worsen the problem or create a bigger mess for the plumber.

6. Call a Licensed Plumber

Once you’ve taken immediate precautions, call Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing, and explain the situation clearly. The more details you provide, the better prepared they’ll be when they arrive.

A calm, quick response in a plumbing emergency can prevent a minor mishap from becoming a major disaster. Knowing what to do before help arrives makes all the difference.
