Sump Pumps

A Homeowner’s Guide to Sump Pump Maintenance

Your sump pump is your home’s first line of defense against basement flooding and water damage. But like any hardworking system, it needs regular care to function correctly, especially when heavy rain or melting snow puts it to the test. Ignoring sump pump maintenance can lead to unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs. Here’s a simple guide to keeping your sump pump in top shape year-round.

1. Test Your Pump Regularly

Don’t wait for a storm to find out your sump pump isn’t working. Every few months, especially before spring rains or winter thaws, test your pump by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should activate automatically and quickly drain the water. If it doesn’t turn on or struggles to pump, it’s time for a tune-up or repair.

2. Clean the Sump Pit

Debris like dirt, sand, and small rocks can build up in the pit over time, clogging the pump or damaging the motor. Unplug the unit and remove any visible gunk from the pit. Check the pump inlet screen and float switch to ensure they’re clean and free of obstructions. Keeping the pit clean helps your pump operate smoothly.

3. Inspect the Discharge Line

Your sump pump moves water outside through a discharge pipe, which can freeze, clog, or become disconnected. Inspect the line for blockages or cracks, and make sure the water is being directed away from your foundation. Consider a freeze guard or insulated pipe cover if you live in a cold climate.

4. Check the Backup System

If your pump has a battery backup or water-powered backup system, test it at least twice a year. Replace the battery every 2–3 years or as recommended by the manufacturer. Backup systems are essential during power outages, when flooding is most likely.

5. Schedule Annual Professional Maintenance

While DIY checks are helpful, it’s smart to have a licensed plumber inspect your sump pump system annually. A professional can check for worn components, electrical issues, and make sure your system meets current codes.

Don’t Let Your Pump Fall Behind

A little maintenance now can save you thousands in water damage down the road. Keep your sump pump in good working order so it’s ready when you need it most. Not sure where to start? Call Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing for expert sump pump service and maintenance today.
